Innovation in Turkey

Preparing the future

May 2015 and Turkey hosts the biggest acquisition globally in online food delivery - the $589 mn purchase of Yemeksepeti by Delivery Hero, the Berlin-based food delivery service.

Expenditure on research and development in Turkey has quadrupled over the past decade to reach 1% of GDP – a better figure but one showing that Turkey still has far to go to catch up with the 2.1% share in EU countries. What is being done to drive this investment in the future? By whom? What opportunities doe this create for companies and for agencies which wish to contribute to the dynamism of this vibrant country?

Innovation in Turkey – Preparing the Future reviews current programmes by state, industry and university. It details the cross-border contribution of bodies such as the World Bank, and the wide range of iniatitives promoted by Turkey’s Ministry of Science Industry and Technology and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBİTAK).

One new development reviewed is Borsa Istanbul’s Private Market platform, which allows companies to access finance without going public. Launched in November 2014, BI Private Market is among the first three private markets in the world. It is a web based, enabling investors and entrepreneurs to find each other.

The complexity is enhanced by the subsidies which BOTAS and Gazprom Export provide. What will be the future rlie of BOTAS and how will liberalization advance now that the private sector has become a significant player? And how will all this affect the pricing of gas to power plants?
