Lignite, Hard Coal & Asphaltite in Turkey

Coals are the boom area in Turkey’s power sector.  By 2024, capacity of different coal-fired generators could have doubled to 28 GW, making it a key focus for power developers today. Over 21 GW of power projects are at various stages of development. This is the dynamic situation explored in IBS’s report Lignite, Hard Coal and Asphaltite in Turkey.

Turkey has reserves of 11.8 Bn tonnes of lignite, 1.3 Bn tonnes of hard coal and 72 Mn tonnes of asphaltite. But which fields should be prioritised?  And what are the issues and concerns for coal-fuelled power generators? And how has the Soma disaster of May 2014 affected the landscape?

Lignite, Hard Coal & Asphaltite in Turkey is a detailed research report prepared for our clients. It draws on unpublished material and sector expertise of the physical realities of the fields, of problems in material supply, and of issues of power plant management.

Government concerns over Turkey’s growing dependence on high-priced natural gas and oil are supporting investor interest, with major units being privatized, incentives for investors, and a delayed programme for introducing carbon taxation. The report is a document of 90 pages. For each of the three fuels the report provides:

  • SUPPLY AND DEMAND
  • INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURE
  • RESERVES
  • ROUTES TO MARKET
  • PRICING MECHANISMS AND LEVELS
  • USE IN POWER
  • OFFICIAL FUEL TARGETS
  • OUTTAKES

How did we develop the report?

The report is based on public information (which is often contradictory), company statements, internet research, and interviews with sector experts, developers and banks. It provides a comprehensive listing of what is going in each reserve and the problems faced in many of these. The report notes opinions of sector experts on the likelihood of reserve development and identified obstacles.

The detail in this report:

  • Is current and reflects most current interest in each reserve
  • Is comprehensive and carefully structured
  • Incorporates an initial power generation feasibility appraisal of the untapped reserves by our sector expert
