Environmental Due Diligence

As foreign companies invest in Turkey – or Turkish companies seek foreign partners – a critical element in the valuation process is determining the environmental or health and safety liabilities which may be incurred by the new investor. This is becoming all the more important as Turkey stiffens its environmental legislation as part of the development of its relations with the European Union. IBS’s Environmental Consultancy Unit identifies the risks and quantifies the costs of this process, for instance:

  1. Advising a company involved in the privatisation of Erdemir on the environmental, health and safety aspects of the company’s iron and steel plants as well as its mines and other subsidiaries.
  2. Carrying out environmental due diligence and a survey of good manufacturing processes (GMP) of a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer and its various plants in Turkey.

Such industrial plant assessment studies are increasingly required by international investors and financing agencies. IBS’s work not only provides an independent appraisal of the current situation but also details the best available mitigation measures and their costs. IBS’s services involve both consultancy and soft engineering services. They range from desk and feasibility-type studies to on-site management and control activities for existing plants as well as projects at conceptualisation phase.

In parallel with the above, IBS advises international companies on specific segments of the environmental industry. Examples of such projects include a detailed study on disaster planning in the Bosphorus.
